Green to Clean (often called “Green 2 Clean” or Green-to-Clean treatment) is a pool recovery process designed to clear up green, algae-infested, or cloudy water and restore it to a clean, safe, and swimmable condition.
Here’s how it works and what it means:
Definition
Green 2 Clean refers to both:
-
A specialized pool chemical product (usually containing sodium bromide and other oxidizing agents).
-
A treatment procedure used to eliminate algae blooms, especially when chlorine alone isn’t effective.
Purpose
-
To remove algae (green, yellow, or mustard types).
-
To oxidize organic contaminants.
-
To restore sanitizer efficiency after algae has overwhelmed the pool.
Typical Process
-
Brush the pool to loosen algae from surfaces.
-
Balance water (pH around 7.2–7.4, alkalinity 60–80 ppm).
-
Add Green 2 Clean according to the manufacturer’s directions (usually 2 oz per 15,000 gallons).
-
Wait 5 minutes, then shock the pool heavily with liquid or granular chlorine (often 2–3 lbs per 10,000 gallons).
-
Run the pump continuously for 24–48 hours and brush again.
-
Vacuum dead algae and clean filters thoroughly.
Results
-
Pool water typically clears within 1–3-5 days, depending on severity.
-
Chlorine demand drops back to normal levels.
-
Surfaces return to a clean, non-slippery condition.
Important Notes
-
Green 2 Clean converts chlorine into bromine temporarily, which remains active against algae.
-
Do not use with other algaecides at the same time.
-
Always verify chlorine levels return to normal before swimming.
